Digital media are increasingly intruding the intimate spheres of our traditionally structured domestic landscapes. The once private home has now evolved into a new public domain, facilitated by social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, or VRChat successively transforming it into a stage for cultural self-expression and a coveted consumer good.
Roaming Home is an extended reality installation that delves into this complex phenomenon of an ongoing digitalization of domestic living and speculates on the bizarre developments of a future virtual residential tourism and its socio-political consequences on our current digital lifestyle culture.
The project utilizes 3D scans of home interiors sourced from freely available uploads on the Internet, provided by their respective owners, whether knowingly or unknowingly. Through a series of domestic rituals, visitors are guided into the narrative structure of these intimate interiors. They are invited to spend a pre-booked duration in the domestic setting, contemplating the story of its owner.
The project Roaming Home - Not My Home, Not My Family is supported by the Goethe Institut Madrid and the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony through tax funds based on the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament, and the Albert Köchlin Foundation.
