Here And There - Inhabiting Spatial Documents was a workshop held as part of the Vienna Architecture Summer School 2022, that explored the architectural relevance of social media as a space-making practice.

As we slowly transition from two-dimensional social media feeds to fully inhabitable social media spaces (such as VRChat, Mozilla Hubs, or AltspaceVR), architects and designers are faced with new paradigms of space-making that fundamentally change the way we are expected to conceived, constructed, and ultimately share spaces with the public. While this shift may break with established architectural conventions, the most persistent question remains unchanged: How do we craft spaces that are meaningful?

During this workshop, we addressed this question by exploring a form of personal space-making akin to writing a diary or personal log. Instead of using pen and paper, participants engaged in diary-making through space and time using volumetric space capture technology and digital worldbuilding.

The workshop consisted of two parts. In the first part, participants explored practices of live capturing spatial footage using volumetric video and 3D scanning technology. Collaborative field trips in Vienna aided in building a spatio-temporal archive, serving as the foundation for the space-making process. The second part involved composing spatial diaries based on the collective four-dimensional archive and sharing them through hosting live events in a mixed reality setup for both local and remote vistors.
