The way we consume food is undergoing a significant change. In the past ten years, the food service industry has experienced dramatic changes, with the covid-19 pandemic further accelerating this trend. The linear model, where food producers sell their products to wholesalers, who then distribute them to brick and mortar supermarkets, restaurants, and hospitality establishments, is being gradually replaced by a fast-paced, complex digital ecosystems and distributed micro warehouses.

At the Vienna Architecture Summer School 2023 we explored the intricate dynamics between digital food delivery services, physical spaces, and the labor involved in this emerging food industry. Therefore, our exploration was of dual concerne.

Firstly, we examined the realm of food delivery apps, focusing on their seductive online user experiences and their public relations (PR) strategies they employ to establish their brands.

Secondly, we traced the spatial consequences of food delivery services in the urban fabric of vienna. This entailed various aspects, such as the documentation of the physical infrastructure connected to food delivery, including food storage facilities, delivery hubs, informal meeting points of delivery employees, and other relevant places.

As our investigation seamlessly alternated between online and offline inquiries, we have chosen a unique approach known as desktop documentaries to showcase our week-long exploration. this documentary method involves using the desktop as both a lens and a canvas to capture, navigate and present our excursion into the realm of food delivery services.
